Shakespeare with a Maori Twist

5/12/2015

Year 12 and 13 students from Te Wharekura o Mauao recently won the South Auckland Region Sheila Winn Shakespeare Competition – a competition where high school students perform 15 minute scenes from Shakespeare’s plays. Te Wharekura o Mauao is the first kura kaupapa to compete in this competition and will now compete against 23 other schools in the nationals in Wellington later this month.

Year 13 student Petra Ririnui of Ngati He, daughter of Rapata and Carol Ririnui, played the lead role ‘Lady Macbeth’ and received high accolades from the Judges on her performance and was praised for her natural acting ability.

Kaiako, Geralyn Allen, said the experience was educational and exciting for the students. Elizabethan Theatre and Te Ao Maori seemed worlds apart, however, similarities between clan wars and Maori battles, helped translate the sixteenth century Scottish play for the students.
