The Environment Court has ruled against the large scale housing development that was proposed to take place on Matakana Island.
Three large forestry landowners TKC Holdings, Carrus Corporation and Blakely Pacific Limited sought to undertake substantial housing development on the forested sand barrier of the island. This required an amendment to the Western Bay of Plenty District Plan. The Environment Court has ruled against the amendment, therefore, halting the proposed housing development.
In March this year a Hui ā Hapu was held at Opureora Marae where over 500 uri of the island attended and voted with results overwhelmingly against development 341 to 38.
This is not the first time the people of Matakana have taken up the fight against development. Matakana representatives say they will continue to be proactive in stopping any development on the moutere.
