Ngāi Te Rangi were well represented at this years' National Maori Basketball Tournament that was held in Rotorua in February. The roopu were triumphant in taking out two of the national titles in the Under 13 and Under 15 Boys divisions and a third placing for the Under 13 Girls.
Te Maru ō Mauao ki Tauranga Moana who is supported by Tauranga City Basketball Association (TCBA) took 6 teams to the tournament which consisted of a squad of 75 including players, coaches and managers. The highlight for the squad was the whānaungatanga, confidence and pride that was shown during the competition and during their stay at Te Takinga Marae in Mourea where the whole squad learnt haka and waiata. Players are all of Māori descent with over half the squad affiliating to Ngāi Te Rangi and Ngāti Ranginui. Led by experienced coaches, assistant coaches and managers including Ngāi Te Rangi uri, Antoine Coffin (Ngai Tuwhiwhia, Opureora) and Spencer Webster (Ngāti Hē, Maungatapu). Ngāi Te Rangi will continue to follow the roopu's performance, and the rise of our talented athletes in our Iwi. Ka mau te wehe!!
