Ngāi Te Rangi is again being well represented on the music stage with the rise of Te Karehana Gardiner-Toi who has been widely acclaimed in the music Industry.
Te Karehana is the mokopuna of Joseph and Parengamihi Gardiner (nee Harawira) of Ngāti Hē me Ngāi Te Ahi hapū and is the son of proud parents Puti Gardiner and Pateriki Toi (Te Tai Tokerau).
Born and raised in Tauranga until he was 8 years old, Te Karehana then spent the rest of his childhood and teenage years growing up in the far north, first in the Hokianga then across to Doubtless Bay.
Following high school Te Karehana made the move to Auckalnd to study Music at UNITEC.
He says he was inspired by his father, who is a composer, and has memories of following his father to Kapahaka practices and even watching him perform Elvis songs at school assemblies. He believes in general his whole family is musically inclined and being Māori it has come quite naturally.
Te Karehana has begun to make in-roads into the music scene at a hectic pace. He has recently returned from New York after recording his debut EP there, and most recently he was awarded The Emerging Artist Award at this years Waiata Maori Awards.
We look forward to seeing Te Karehana receiving a Grammy award in the future.
Tena Koe Te Karehana.
